It’s not really going to generate a macho image.

Yesterday there was a transport strike (a not uncommon occurrence in this country) and I was in town on foot when I received a call asking if I was available immediately to do a voice-over for a documentary. With no public transport and traffic fairly screwed up, the only way I could get there in time was for the director, who was a short walk up the road, to give me a lift. On his scooter.

Throughout the journey, I managed to just rest my hands lightly on his shoulders rather than clinging on for dear life.

Now that took some acting. Visible light, which can be seen by the human eye, exists in between.

Ultraviolet was also the title of an English television series in the 90’s, which starred Jack Davenport and Susannah Harker. It was dubbed by some as the English X Files, which wasn't really the case; it was a fairly stylish but downbeat series about a secret agency that dealt with modern day vampires (although they were never called vampires just "leeches" or Code 5's - Roman numeral V, geddit?). Promising as it was, it only lasted one season.

Ultraviolet is also the title of a recently released vampire movie starring Milla Jovovich. It is bloody diabolical. We were there pretty early so we could get something to eat first while the place was still mostly empty. About half an hour after we arrived, a group of young people turned up and someone told us it was one of the kids 18th birthday.

So over the next couple of hours, I expected noise, flamboyant dancing and general hi-jinkery,

Not a bit of it. And since the cast are the ones who undertake the many and complex set changes, this was a problem.

Everyone pitched in to pick up the slack and things carried on pretty much as they should and I managed to hide my grimacing when I had lines to deliver. Luckily, it's not a huge part so I spent most of my time sitting in the wings, swearing under my breath.

I thought these things only happened to other people.

Bah.

http://www.matthewtreynolds.com/

History

1834 was the year of Sir Robert Peel's Tamworth manifesto. It was when he promised to "Conserve what is good and only reform where necessary". It is widely acknowledged as the point when the Tories became the Conservatives.

Coincidentally, 18:34 was the time on the clock of the DVD during Rent when I burst out laughing as the third character in quick succession revealed he had AIDS. While there is nothing funny about AIDS or HIV, the crass exposition was so dreadful; laughter was the only viable alternative to acts of furious anger. And as I was the idiot who had rented it, I had no one to blame but myself.

One of the worst elements of this supposed musical is the lazy tendency to simply say what is going on and think that's OK if it is sung. No attempt at crafting songs of any value let alone using events or characters to move things along. Why bother when some idiot can spontaneously sing, "Oh my God...you mean...she's shagging someone else?" followed by a piss poor dance routine?

And nothing this recent should have dated so badly. The version in Team America looked a lot better.

http://www.matthewtreynolds.com/

Shame

Sadly, in a fit of self-destructive mania, I rented The Da Vinci Code. The book annoyed me to biblical proportions but mostly because of its appalling prose and style; written for and by the mind of a seven year old. But perhaps the film version would simply be a ripping yarn and avoid all the obvious traps of crass storytelling and exposition.

Cue Ron Howard and Tom Hanks.

Bastards.

Of course I should have known better but with a supporting cast of true quality, I had hopes.

To be absolutely fair, Paul Bettany was excellent. Alas, Jurgen Prochnow, Jean Reno and two of my heroes, Sir Ian McKellen and Alfred Molina were nothing more than distractions to the embarrassing, clumsy and ugly direction of Ron Howard; a man who has delivered decent films in the past.

And I simply don't have sufficient time on this earth to express how awful Tom Hanks' entire career has been. He at least has the virtue of consistency.

Bollocks.

http://www.matthewtreynolds.com/

World Class

The most over used phase in football today (and for the last few years) is probably "World Class". When Andy Johnson, Luca Toni and Adriano are described this way, frankly, it winds me up. OK, there is no outright definition but it really should mean a bit more than "quite good this week".

For me, world class is someone who would be in a squad of 23 players from anywhere in the world in the same format as a country's World Cup squad. i.e 4 strikers, 3 keepers, 8 defenders, 8 midfielders. So if you're not one of the best 4 strikers in the world, you are not world class.

2 years ago, I think most football supporters would have agreed on about half of who that 23 may be; in 2004, most supporters would have included Henry, Schevchenko, Ronaldinho, Gerrard, Terry, Zidane, Viera, Zambrotta, Ronaldo (tooth face rather than giraffe neck) Cech, Buffon and Thuram. And the rest would have course been open to fierce debate.

We have reached the end of an era. We have a world without Zidane and Figo and the prowess of Henry, Schevchenko, Ronaldo (tooth face rather than giraffe neck), Viera, Raul and many others all fading at the same time. But the next generation of Robben, Ronaldo (giraffe neck not tooth face) Robinho, Ibrahimovich, Eto'o and Messi have not yet quite stepped up to the plate.

Right now, I know I still think Ronaldinho isn't bad but the rest of the squad could change on a fairly regular basis.

I promise you, because he has had 2 good games when those around him were awful, Hargreaves is not a world class player. God-awful, stupid remakes of classic British comedies are evil. Willem Dafoe is always watchable and in this case, he was playing an obvious caricature of Donald Rumsfeld (even matching his hairstyle or lack thereof). Dennis Quaid, who seems to be making something of a comeback in the last couple of years, was too likeable in the George W Bush role but that was just how the script was written. And the often irritating Hugh Grant was fantastic as the grotesque Simon Cowell type host of the appalling eponymous show. Dreamz with a zee. She is a fairly rotund, middle-aged woman. She usually wears a white vest which is a couple of sizes too small and sits by the tree stump out side our block talking loudly to herself. But she seems fairly happy, slightly quizzical and completely non-threatening. I have no idea if Rome has a similar policy with regards to Care in the Community, which has so spectacularly failed in London. I hope that the policy here is better and that if this woman is mentally ill, as opposed to just being a little eccentric, she receives the help she needs.

Earlier today, I was walking the dog while taking some rubbish and recycling to the bins down the road when I heard someone talking loudly, aggressively and without reply. I turned and saw a man in his late thirties, with an odd middle-distance stare. Without realising it, I must have given him an automatic "I want to kill you slowly" look. This is of course, the only rational response in London. Only a fool would show any sign of weakness or kindness to a stranger.

He bolted. I felt terrible.

Half an hour ago, I was sitting on the balcony and heard a familiar sounding chatter as he went past, totally oblivious to all around him.

I felt strangely comforted to know he was (kind of) OK. But I still think I need to think only good thoughts for a while.

The wonderful thing about tiggers...

...is that tiggers are wonderful things

Who put the "I" in truly bloody awful tedious nonsense?

It has taken me a few days to come to terms with the true horror that unfolded. I think, perhaps now, in the cold light of day, putting it down in writing may prove to be a cathartic experience. Nonetheless, I feel I should warn you; you may not like what you are about to read.

I like Ryan Adams; his country tinged rock reminiscent of Neil Young at times, especially with the propensity for harmonica playing. And the gentle whimsy of songs like Firecracker can be truly beautiful.

Bryan Adams, on the other hand, is a crater faced hoary old beast who, although coming across as a nice enough chap, makes sub-Bon Jovi stadium rock and soporific ballads.

I went to see him play on Monday night.

OK, it was a freebie and the Coliseum is a spectacular venue. Also, I was quite drunk (Note to self, when you make a scooter journey that normally takes 25 minutes in about 7, you’re probably not in a fit state to drive. I didn’t realise how tipsy I was until well underway but seriously kids; it’s not big and it’s not clever.)

The only thing that could have made the whole fiasco any more ridiculous is if someone even worse had been headlining. Someone unremittingly dull, hopelessly far removed from the respectable lexicon of pop. Someone like Billy Joel.

Even inebriated, a couple of songs in and I’d had quite enough and made a hasty retreat. But it was harrowing.

There was a time when I was quite cool. Sigh.

http://www.matthewtreynolds.com/

The art of procrastination

I feel my productivity levels are in real danger; Fox have started re-running all of Malcolm in the Middle during the day. Suffice to say, I’ve had a huge discoloured scar on my leg ever since.

For the last few weeks, that part of my leg has been a bit itchy. This morning, I was sitting out on the balcony with the Mrs and happened to notice, the scar has almost completely vanished. I knew I was leading a healthier lifestyle out here but having something healed up that I thought was going to mark me for life is astounding.

I will never cease to be amazed by the human body’s ability to heal itself if given a decent chance.

http://www.matthewtreynolds.com

I'm lovin' it

For all the moaning I have done about the state television is in, I keep finding new shows that I love. They know when to push, when to lie, when to allow the would-be client time and space to take in the good things they are viewing and when to shut the hell up.

Sadly, this is not the case in Italy.

There is a strange gift people seem to have here; the ability for two people to maintain two entirely separate conversations at the same time. Both talking, filling every possible moment of quiet air with inane chatter.

If regular salespeople around the world know how to converse with their clients but add 20% more with pure salespeak, just imagine what that extra 20% is like on an Italian saleswoman.

Dear God, I hope we get this house. The wedding’s in the UK at a beautiful old country manor and we’ll be staying there overnight as will a few members of family and a number of friends will be staying in the area. The day after will be a fairly lazy day, where a few of us will get together for lunch and maybe a drink or two. In the afternoon, we go into London, check into our 5 star hotel in Belgravia so we’ll be nice and close to Victoria for our noon train. Which is the Orient Express to Paris. We stay in Paris for a few days, then on to Vienna for a few days, then on to Budapest and finally to Prague. Every hotel we picked is beautiful, with excellent views of the city and well located for everything we plan to do. Since I was a kid and first read Dracula, I’ve wanted to go through the Carpathian Mountains on a train and now I’m going to do it with my wife (I have to get used to calling her that.). Yes, I am a deeply smug man but right now, life is good.

www.matthewtreynolds.com

Things I love about Rome, part 1138

This is a great city. I will always love London but Rome has so many other things going for it. My neighbourhood (Quarto Miglio, in the south east of the city) is fairly central, only about 20 minutes from the Colosseum and yet it has the feel of a village all to itself. And walking around the neighbourhood, there are citrus trees everywhere.
We have a beautiful, spacious 3-bed apartment with large balconies on 3 sides and now we have small orange, lemon, grapefruit and mandarin trees. Sitting outside for breakfast or dinner was never really available to me where I lived in London but I can’t see the novelty wearing off anytime soon.

www.matthewtreynolds.com

Visions

Good news. I've been cast in a new movie. It's called "Visions" and is a psychological thriller. There is a serial killer (isn't there always) whose MO is to let his victms be found while they are still alive but set traps around them to ensnare the would be saviours. The FBI have dubbed him "The Spider" and he is a very bad man.

Alas, I have not been cast as the killer and I only have a relativley small role but it's my first acting job since I moved to Italy, so I'm still pretty excited.

Also, Luigi (the director) seems cool. He was at pains to say he wanted us to work on our characters, adding new dialogue and making them real people, which sounds like fun.

I should be measured up for my wardrobe fitting in a few days.
